WAYNE - Wayne State College senior punter Randy Weich and senior defensive lineman Jeff Pokorny have been selected to the 2012 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region Three squad released today by the Don Hansen Football Committee.
Weich was named First Team punter while Pokorny was a Third Team selection on defense. The First Team and Second Team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2012 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-American Team will be named later this month.
Weich has earned four different All-American honors this post season after leading the Northern Sun Conference in punting for the third straight season averaging 44.8 yards per punt. The Pierce, Nebraska graduate was an All-NSIC South Division First Team punter for a third straight season while ranking third in NCAA Division II in punting average this season. Weich owns virtually every punting record in Wayne State football history. All-American honors for Weich so far this season include AFCA First Team All-American and Second Team All-American honors from Associated Press Little All-American, Daktronics and BSN (Beyond College Sports Network).
Pokorny, a 6-3 280 pound senior from Howells, Nebraska, was an All-NSIC South Division First Team selection this season after leading all linemen in the NSIC with 74 total tackles. He ranked second on the Wildcat defense in total tackles and finished tied for third in the NSIC with three fumble recoveries. Pokorny finished 2012 with 12.5 tackles for loss for 52 yards to go with four sacks for 27 yards. He had a season-high 11 tackles vs. St. Cloud State on September 22nd and had eight tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks for 18 yards vs. Concordia-St. Paul on October 20th.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on August 29, 2010. Hansen started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America Teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
Wayne State finished the 2012 season with a 6-5 record. It was the sixth straight winning season for the Wildcats, the first time that has happened in the 97 year history of Wayne State football. WSC loses 16 seniors from this year’s team.
