Committee Sidelines Heineman's Tax Reform Proposals

Posted: 21 February, 2013

LINCOLN (AP) – The Legislature’s Revenue Committee has officially killed Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman’s two tax reform proposals. Omaha Sen. Beau McCoy, who introduced the bills on behalf of the governor, made a motion Wednesday to shelve both bills.  One measure would have eliminated Nebraska’s income tax, while the other would have reduced the income taxes that retirees pay. In exchange, Heineman had proposed eliminating sales-tax exemptions.  Heineman announced over the weekend that he wanted to pull the bills after hearing concerns from business owners, farmers and other groups.  Lawmakers say they plan to discuss tax reform at a slower pace. The Legislature’s Executive Board considered a bill Tuesday that would create a task force to study possible changes. Lawmakers would review past tax studies and recommend the best tax-code updates for Nebraska.
