LAUREL - Firefighters from five northeast Nebraska fire departments battled a fire in two large buildings in downtown Laurel that started early this morning. KCAU TV reports that the fire broke out around 6:00 this morning. The first building caught in the blaze was the historical Laurel National Bank, which dates back to 1902. A second building, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Insurance, which is adjacent to the bank, was also destroyed in the fire. The Fire Marshall determined that the fire started on the second floor of the bank. Crews evacuated much of downtown Laurel while working to contain the fire. Departments from Laurel, Concord, Coleridge, Belden and Wayne responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is still being determined.
