Wildcat Men and Women Finish In Top Ten At NSIC Indoors

MANKATO, Minn. - The Wayne State College women finished seventh with the men taking eighth at the 2013 Northern Sun Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Mankato, Minnesota Friday and Saturday.  The Wildcat women scored 39 points and had one individual champion and three All-Conference performers while the men recorded 28 points and had two All-Conference finishers.
                Minnesota State repeated as the men’s team champion with 207.5 points followed by MSU Moorhead in a distant second place with 111.  Augustana (102.5), Sioux Falls (89) and St. Cloud State (58.5) rounded out the top five men’s teams.
                The University of Mary repeated as the women’s team champion with 185 points while Winona State took second at 130.  The University of Sioux Falls was third with 92 points followed by Minnesota Duluth (85) and Minnesota State (83) concluding the top five women’s teams.
Wayne State’s lone conference champion was junior thrower Carly Fehringer, who won the weight throw Saturday with a new NSIC meet record throw of 63’ 6”.  She also place sixth in the shot put Friday to place in two events.  WSC dominated the weight throw as the Wildcat throwers finished first, second, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth.  Senior Lachel Milander earned All-NSIC honors with a second place mark of 60’ 6 ¾”, an NCAA provisional mark.  Milander also scored a fifth place finish in the shot put at 44’ 9 ½”. 
Also earning All-NSIC honors for the Wildcats was sophomore thrower Sara Wells, who took third place in the shot put with a throw of 46’ 5 ¼”.  Other medal winners for the Wildcat women included Emily Wells taking fifth in the weight throw (56’ 6”), Kyndra Sturm was seventh in the weight throw (54’ 9 ½”), Mackenzie Masching took eighth in the weight throw (53’ 10 ¼”) and Sidney Blum finished eighth in the long jump (17’ 6”).
The WSC men had two All-NSIC finishers as sophomore Zach Thomsen recorded a second place finish in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:21.63 while senior thrower Brad Wright posted a second place finish Friday in the weight throw with an NCAA provisional mark of 59’ 2”.  He also finished sixth in the shot put (49’ 7 ¾”) to earn a second medal in the meet.
Other point scorers for the Wildcat men included Jared Balady finished sixth in the 600 meter run (1:22.75), Bryan Dunn took sixth in the weight throw (50’ 10 ¾”), Caleb Dillon finished seventh in the weight throw (50’ 10”) and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Balady, Michael King, Corbin Marksmeier and Thomsen took eighth place at 3:26.54.
