WSC Baseball Takes Wins Two More vs. Northern State

WAYNE - The Wayne State baseball improved to 24-10 on the season and is now 16-4 in conference play after the offense exploded to score 14 runs in a 14-4 victory in game one and the ‘Cats then scored 10 more runs in a 10-0 win over Northern State in game two. The Wolves drop to 13-19 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
            Wayne State jumped out to an early lead over Northern State as they posted three runs in the top of the first inning and two runs in the top of the second inning for a 5-0 lead after two complete innings of play. The Wildcats used the long ball early as their three runs in the first came off of a solo bomb by CJ Nolen and Brandon Lalk hit a two run homerun to give Wayne State the 3-0 lead. The Wildcats then got two more runs in the top of the second when Blake Brisson picked up an RBI on a sacrifice bunt and Kevin Andersen notched an RBI with a single. Wayne State extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth when Tanner Lancaster scored on a wild pitch. WSC would post three more runs in the top of the fifth inning when Lalk, Michael Herman and Curtis Bussard each picked up an RBI to make the score 9-0.
            Northern State would score one run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-1 before Wayne State scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their advantage to 11-1 when CJ Nolen hit his second homerun of the game, this time a two run shot. The ‘Cats would pour on three more runs in the top of the seventh when Mike Servais, Blake Brisson and Brett Keim each were credited with an RBI. The Wolves would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 14-4 in favor of WSC.
            Wayne State outhit Northern State 17-8 in the conference and had 13 RBI’s to NSU’s three. CJ Nolen and Brandon Lalk had the big games for WSC as Nolen went 3-4 with three RBI’s and three runs scored and Lalk went 3-3 with three RBI’s and one run scored. Blake Brisson had two RBI’s while Kevin Andersen, Brett Keim, Michael Herman and Curtis Bussard each had one.
            Eric Schwieger improved to 2-2 on the season with the win as he struck out 10 batters in 6.0 innings of work while allowing five hits and one run. Nathan Nietfeld was tagged with the loss and is now 2-5 on the year.
            Game two saw the Wildcats once again erupt offensively winning 9-0 over Northern State. WSC again scored three runs in the top of the first inning with the big hit coming in the form of a two run homer by Brandon Lalk. Wayne State would score again in the top of the fourth inning when Alex Kreft hit a sacrifice fly to score Curtis Bussard giving the ‘Cats a 4-0 lead. Wayne Stat then doubled their lead in the top of the fifth inning when they scored four runs to make the score 8-0 with Tanner Lancaster coming up with a triple to drive in one of the runs. WSC then scored two more run in the final two innings as Kevin Andersen and Scott Doggett recorded RBI’s to give Wayne State the 10-0 victory.
The Wildcats outhit the Wolves 14-5. Kevin Andersen and Curtis Bussard each had three hits for WSC, Michael Herman and CJ Nolen each grabbed two hits and Blake Brisson, Scott Doggett, Brandon Lalk and Tanner Lancaster were each credited with one hit. Lalk led the team in RBI’s with two while five other players had one.
Michael Frericks picked up his fourth win of the season and is now 4-1 on the year after going 7.0 innings and striking out eight batters while only allowing four hits and no runs. Clint Manzo suffered the loss for Northern State and is now 3-3 on the season.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend hosting #10 Minnesota State in a four game series with game one of doubleheaders set to start at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
