WAYNE (KTCH/KCTY) – Mother Nature was finally gracious enough to grant northeast Nebraska perfect conditions for high school baseball on Saturday.
Wayne High hosted Platte Valley (Yutan, Mead and Ashland) at Hank Overin Memorial Field in a game that was highlighted by pitching from the opposition. Platte Valley’s Jared Novotny struck out 10 batters on his way to a no-hitter and a 9-0 Patriot win. The only blemishes against his game were an error in the fourth inning and an error in the sixth inning which allowed runners aboard for Wayne. The Blue Devils had a hard time producing base runners, as Brad Longe and Brook Bowers were the only two to reach. Jake Lutt got the start for Wayne, going 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs on three hits, six walks and a hit batter while also striking out nine. Brad Longe finished the sixth inning walking two batters, while Danny Melena closed the game out for Wayne in the seventh, surrendering four runs on three hits and two walks, striking out one. With the loss, the Blue Devils are now 3-9 on the year and will face Arlington in the final regular season game of the year on Monday in Wayne. It’s then on to the B1 District tournament in Hickman where Wayne will face DC West Next Saturday.
