Throwers Highlight Wildcat Track And Field Performances

UNDATED - The Wayne State College track and field teams competed at two different meets Friday night and Saturday as nine athletes participated in the Mount Marty Twilight Meet in Yankton, South Dakota Friday evening while four others competed Saturday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

                Wildcat throwers Carly Fehringer, Lachel Milander, Emily Wells and Brad Wright competed Saturday at the Drake Relays against some of the top Division I talent in the country.  In a field of 24 contestants in the hammer throw, Wayne junior Carly Fehringer took fourth place with her second-best mark of the season at 202’ 10”.  Senior Lachel Milander came in seventh place at 195’ 6” and junior Emily Wells was 18th with a top mark of 175’ 0”.
                Senior thrower Brad Wright competed in the Drake Relays men’s discus and was 20th out of 28 competitors with a top mark of 151’ 11”. 
                The nine athletes that competed Friday night at the Mount Marty Twilight Meet collected three first place finishes in a meet that featured athletes from Division I South Dakota and South Dakota State, Division II schools Augustana and Sioux Falls and NAIA schools Briar Cliff, Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Morningside, Mount Marty and Northwestern College.
                Junior Mackenzie Masching scored a first place finish in the hammer throw (172’ 6”) while sophomore Sara Wells had a first place throw in the discus of 154’ 2”.  Lexi Guhl was second in the 100 meter hurdles (15.81) while Sidney Blum had a second place finish in the long jump at 17’ 8”.
                The WSC men were led by sophomore Zach Thomsen, who won the 800 meter run in 1:54.95.  Matt Peter came in second place in the shot put (51’ 4 ½”) while Mickey Doerr was second in the 200 meter dash (22.76) with Jared Balady taking second in the 400 meter hurdles (56.97).    
                Several Wayne State athletes will compete Sunday and Monday in the NSIC Heptathlon/Decathlon while the entire Wildcat team will close out the regular season on Saturday, May 4 at the University of Nebraska Invite in Lincoln.
