Lawmakers To Vote Again On Failed City Sales Tax Repeal

Posted: 17 May, 2013

LINCOLN (AP) - Lawmakers are slated to vote again on a failed attempt to repeal a Nebraska city sales tax law. Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha took aim at the law on Thursday, arguing that it disproportionately affects the poor. The law allows cities to raise their local sales taxes by a half cent, with voter approval. It passed last year despite Gov. Dave Heineman's veto. Chambers introduced the repeal bill earlier this year, but it was held in committee. On Wednesday, he filed a motion to attach his measure to another tax bill pending in the Legislature. Lawmakers fell one vote short of the 25 they needed to add his amendment onto the bill. A motion was filed to reconsider the vote.
