Wayne's Grant Anderson Wins Gold At State

OMAHA (KTCH/KCTY) - Wayne High’s Grant Anderson was crowned the Class B champion in the high jump at the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships at Omaha Burke on Friday. Anderson won a jump-off with Milford’s Tyler Ross, and cleared 6’6” to claim the gold. The marks the first gold medal for the Blue Devils since Caleb Garvin won the discus in 2003.

Other area medalists from the weekend included, in girls’ Class C action, Wisner-Pilger’s Samantha Lierman won the shot put, and Pender’s Paige Ballinger finished fourth. Hartington Cedar Catholic’s Alexandria Walter earned bronze in the 100 meter dash and silver in the 200 meter dash. Laurel-Concord/Coleridge’s Ellie Arduser was third in the 200. And LCC’s 1600 meter relay team of Ellie Arduser, Kelsey Dietrich, Cameron Eddie and Samantha Camenzind was third.

In Class C boys’ Wisner-Pilger’s Colton Vahle won the high jump, while Lucas Wiechman was fourth in the 110 hurdles and first in the 300 hurdles. Joshua Dolph of Wakefield was fourth in the 800 meter run.

For Class D girls, Michaela Dedinger of Hartington High won silver in both the discus and shot put.

In Class D boys, Hartington High was the team champion. Eric Derickson won the long jump, while the 3200 meter relay team of Patrick Wortmann, Taylor Fischer, Griffon Kalin and Adam Hochstein was second. Adam Hochstein was third in the 3200 run and first in the mile. The 400 meter relay team of Alec Fuelberth, Nick Miller, Brandon Mainquist and Joe Noecker won gold. Nick Schmit of Randolph was third in the 800.

Other Wayne High results

Boys:
Demetrius Alexander finished 7th in his heat of the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.417 seconds and 5th in his heat of the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.428 seconds. He did not qualify for the finals in either event. Trevor Pecena finished 5th in his heat of the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.161 seconds and did not qualify for the finals.

Girls:
In the 800-meter run, Cassie Heier finished 20th with a time of 2:30.01 and Angie Nelson 22nd at 2:31.57. The 4X100 relay team of McKenna Frevert, Meagan Backer, Jalyn Zeiss and Cassie Heier finished 14th at 52.69 seconds. Lexi Sokol was 10th in the shot put at 37 feet, 7.25 inches. Ashton Schweers tied for 9th in the high jump at 5 feet even.

Wayne will return eight of its 10 state qualifiers next season.
