Madison County Officials Warn Against Home Improvement Scams
Posted: 22 May, 2013
MADISON - The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about out of state individuals involved in home improvement scams in Northeast Nebraska.
Sheriff Vernon Hjorth says the individuals are preying on the public by going to their homes and convincing the owners they need their driveways sealed, house painted or roofs repaired. These groups of people are believed to have conducted similar scams in the area before. Hjorth and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office offers these steps to avoid the scams:
Get multiple estimates on any home repair job before signing a contract.
Check out the contractor’s reference and visit the site to check out the quality of work itself, if possible.
Check for complaints with the Better Business Bureau and make sure the contractor is registered with your state board of contractors and your local building inspection office.
Never pay in full up front, especially if cash is the only payment accepted.
Make sure the contractor is insured and bonded.
Document in writing the scope of the work to be done and the complete cost and time necessary to complete the job and how payment will be handled.
Notify your local law enforcement immediately if you suspect the contractor is not legitimate.
