WAYNE (KTCH/KCTY) – The Wayne Junior Legion baseball team hosted Albion in the finals of the Class B, Area 5 tournament at Overin Field Tuesday night.
With a berth in the state tournament on the line, Wayne needed to beat Albion just once to advance, whereas Albion needed to beat Wayne twice. It wasn’t in the stars for Wayne, as Albion took the first game 7-1. Wayne struggled offensively, only mustering four hits that came from Brook Bowers, Noah Braun, Mikey Reyes and Beau Bowers. Jake Lutt suffered the pitching loss, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks, striking out six. Braun finished the game giving up two runs on two hits.
The second game looked to be a change of fate for Wayne, as they led 5-2 in the top of the fourth, but things got a little crazy after that. Albion plated eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, to go along with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Wayne would add just one more run, and the final score favored Albion 14-6. Lucas Longe had a pair of doubles and two RBIs for Wayne at the plate. Lutt and Brook Bowers added two hits and an RBI each, while Caden Korth added two hits. Wayne used four pitchers in the game, but Jack Belt took the decision in relief, allowing four runs on three hits. Wayne ends its season as the Class B, Area 5 tournament runner-up.
