Posted: 18 September, 2013

WAYNE (KTCH/KCTY) – The Wayne High softball team hosted a triangular with Boone Central and Pierce Tuesday night, going 2-0. The Blue Devils started off the evening against Boone Central. Wayne plated three runs in the second inning, followed by a nine-run explosion in the third to win 12-0 after the mercy was called. Danica Schaefer led Wayne hitters with three hits, including a homerun, double and two RBIs. Rylee Bessmer added two hits and three RBIs, while Nicole Craft and Abbie Hix added a pair of hits and two RBIs. Kendall Gamble got the shutout win pitching not allowing a hit while striking out three and walking one.

In the second game, it was Pierce vs. Boone Central. Fate would repeat itself for the Cardinals, as Pierce also won 12-0 in three innings. Maddie Jenkins led Bluejay batters with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Abby Starkel was the winning pitcher for Pierce, throwing the shutout while surrendering just one hit, walking two and striking out one.

The finale saw a matchup of 12-4 Wayne vs. 13-2 Pierce. The game would not be the barnburner it had the potential to be, however. Wayne erupted for six runs in the first inning and followed that up with two in the second and two more in the fourth. The final score favored the Blue Devils 10-0 after the mercy rule was called after the fourth. Victoria Kranz paced Wayne hitters with two hits and four RBIs, while Craft added two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Getting the shutout win this time for Wayne was Hannah Belt, who allowed just two hits and struck out five.

After the triangular, Boone Central falls to 2-12, Pierce is now 13-3 and Wayne improves to 13-4. The Blue Devils are next in action on Thursday as they hit the road for a contest with Madison/Humphrey.
