Blue Devils Are Headed To State!!!

WISNER (KTCH/KCTY) – For the first time in a decade, the Wayne High volleyball team can call itself a district champion. The Blue Devils took on longtime rival Norfolk Catholic in the C1-4 District championship played in Wisner on Friday night. The Knights were the underdogs, heading into the contest at 9-20 overall, while Wayne was the favorite at 24-6. Norfolk Catholic played like they were the favorite; however, taking the first set 28-26. The next three sets were extremely competitive, but they each favored Wayne, going 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20, giving the Blue Devils the 3-1 win. Ashton Schweers was a dominant player for Wayne, racking up 26 kills and 18 digs for the double-double. Alyssa Schmale also had a double-double with 11 kills and 38 digs. Emma Evetovitch had a stellar night at the net, handing out 49 set assists, along with 19 digs. Meagan Backer was the defensive leader, recording 46 digs, and Peyton Roach added 16. The Blue Devils improve their record to 25-6 overall, and will advance to the state tournament in Grand Island next Thursday-Saturday.
