Upper Iowa Earns Comeback Win Over Wayne State

WAYNE - Upper Iowa erased a 13-0 second quarter deficit and rallied to defeat Wayne State College 24-21 in Northern Sun Conference football played Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Field in Wayne.
The Wildcats drop to 2-8 on the season with the loss and 1-5 in NSIC South Division play while Upper Iowa improves to 6-4 and 3-3 in the NSIC South.
Wayne State took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a Charlie Davidson 10-yard run at the 5:43 mark. The ‘Cats increased that lead to 13-0 midway through the second quarter with a 10-play, 76 yard drive as Charlie Davidson found the end zone again on a two-yard run with 5:18 to play in the second quarter. But on the PAT kick, the snap was bobbled and holder Austan Pomajzl’s pass was intercepted by Jordan Andera who ran it back for a two-point conversion to make the score 13-2.
Late in the second quarter, Upper Iowa took advantage of a Wayne State turnover as linebacker Cole Stephen recovered a Davidson fumble at the Wildcat 15 yard line. Three plays later, the Peacocks scored as running back Chris Smith hit paydirt from two yards out making the score 13-8 at halftime following a failed two-point pass play.
The Peacocks took their first lead of the game at 14-13 with 9:15 to play in the third quarter on a 26-yard pass play from Jaeschke to Drew Kaluzny. UIU scored again with 57 seconds to go in the third quarter on a Chris Smith 16-yard run giving the Peacocks a 21-13 lead after three quarters.
Upper Iowa then went to a ball control offense and used 7:28 off the clock to get a 26-yard field goal from Timothy Reub with 7:17 to go in the game giving the Peacocks a 24-13 advantage.
Wayne State put together a 13-play, 80 yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter as freshman Nate Rogers hauled in an 18-yard pass from Zach Osborn with a two-point pass from Osborn to Grant Otten making the score 24-21 with 44 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats went for the on-side kick but Upper Iowa recovered to seal the 24-21 win.
Upper Iowa held a 351-297 advantage in total offense over the Wildcats. WSC had 128 yards rushing and 169 passing in the contest.
Charlie Davidson led the Wildcat ground attack with 95 yards on 19 carries and two scores. Rashad Trimble accounted for 32 yards on eight rushes.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Osborn completed 14 of 34 passes for 169 yards with one touchdown. Tonev Abraham had a team-high four catches for 23 yards followed by Cole McDaniel with three grabs for 66 yards.
Defensively, WSC was led by senior safety Austan Pomajzl’s 12 tackles and two pass breakups while sophomore linebacker Nathan Scott added 10 stops. Junior linebacker Nick Monzu had one interception for 20 return yards.
Wayne State will close out the 2013 season at home next Saturday hosting the University of Sioux Falls in the annual Egg Bowl Game at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne starting at 1 p.m.
